I know how to find materials in Resources http://resources.maxwellrender.com/sear ... 2=1&tipo=1
and I can download it. The download has many files and I don't know how much of the file, or what parts of it are supposed to be extracted, or where to extract them.

Where am I supposed to extract all of this stuff in order to use the material ?

You can put them pretty much anywhere once they're extracted. You may need to reassociate the links though (if you open up the .mxm file it'll ask you where the files are if it can't find them).

I can't quite read your screen but it looks like what you've got there are actually 3 different materials (the .mxm files) and then a bunch of image files that are used in the materials. One method which works well for maxwell is to put all of those .mxm files in a folder (let's call it Sand) and then create a subfolder called Textures where you put all of those image files. That way Maxwell is typically able to find them itself without you having to worry about repathing.

Here's a screen shot of my folder structure (note the path at the top of the window)

Just a little tip - when keeping all textures in one folder, make sure there're no textures with same file names. For example, I had a few materials that used "Bumpmap.jpg".
So, a good thing is to check all the map names and rename them if needed when adding new MXMs to your library.

It still seems complicated to me and I am frequently not able to render because it can't find some file.
Some of the file paths from downloaded materials have a path that is found only on the authors computer.

I still need step by step instructions on what to do with the various files that are included when you download a new material.

They all seem to have a path name relative to the computer they were made on. How do you fix that?

Whenever I download a material, I'll place it in a particular folder somewhere (as I mentioned in the post above). Once everything's in the right spot, I'll open the .mxm file. The material editor is quite smart (smarter than the plugins typically) and if you've set up the materials how I said it will look for the material in the wrong location (as you mention) but will automatically look to see if there's a Textures folder where the mxm is located. If there is, it will repath everything automatically without you knowing it. In other words the process is, 1) save the mxm and image files as I mentioned earlier 2) open the mxm 3) hit save 4) close mxm.

Everything should be kosher at that point.

The key is to make sure you can open your mxm without any errors popping up. If you do get an error asking you to locate such and such image file, just browse to that file wherever it is on your computer and then save the mxm when you've manually repathed everything.

The plugins tend to be pretty "dumb" in the sense that if they don't see the image file(s) where the mxm is pointing, it will just pop up an error instead of looking for a Textures folder.

wow!

Using the online material browser take all of the work out of material file management.

Very cool. Now you don't need to keep huge material files on your own computer. They are all available online at the click of a button.
Works very well, however, I did have some trouble downloading some materials when I got an error that said I could not unzip the file. ??
