Hello,

I am trying to re-create the SSS presets from the previous version of Maxwell.

Nd, Scattering Color, Transmittance Color, Scattering Coef, Asymmetry and Roughness all seem to be the same as the previous version ( unless I'm missing something)...

The odd parameter out seems to be Absorption Coef -- I'm sure this is covered by some combination of Attenuation and K (extinction coef).

I think the Absorption Coef could be translated (partially) as the Attenuation setting expressed in "mm" -- is that correct? It yeilds a pretty similar result to the old material until we get into Absorption Coef over 999...

I remember the Extinction Coef from the old SSS wizard, so I'm thinking that materials that used to have a high Absorption Coef would now be made through some form of Attenuation/K combo.

Flint, Marble, Blood and a few others reveal a missing link in my understanding some of the other look pretty good...

So what am I missing?

Thanks,
Jason.

Ok, so I have something -- I don't know if it's right but it looks right:

Take the Absorption Coef and subtract from 10,000 (if working in MM) bump 2 decimals over for anything under 1000 and 3 over for anything over 1000 -- use this resulting number for Attenuation in MM.

I have no idea why this works -- but it seems to yield results... anybody able to shed some light on this?

BTW I can post the MXM's (if they do turn out to be right mathematically) to share with anybody who wants them.

Best,
Jason.

Hey Tok_Tok,

I agree and will post them as soon as I have confirmation that I am doing it correctly -- the main reason I wanted to do this is also to be able to accurately convert old SSS materials from the gallery correctly as well.

I still have on an older computer a demo version of 1.7x which allows me to open older MXM's and look at the settings and while I was studying for this over the last year I downloaded many files from the gallery which are less useful now in version 2.x... I would love to be able to make those files useful once more.

Plus I need to be able to understand what is going on here if I intend to talk about it -- nothing worse than useless instruction :x

Best,
Jason.

Yes, I can't believe they removed these. I used them often.
Please add them back in and warn us if your are going to remove features in the future.
Thank you.

Hello reverts1,

For Maxwell v2 the SSS model was completely rewritten from scratch, making the old SSS collection not look the way the used to look on v1 model (in fact they will look wrong, as the model changed a lot).

You can get the old SSS materials collection if you preserve an old Maxwell v1 installation, or we can send it to you if you want to, but they will be completely useless, and won't look fine.

In fact, we are currently working on improving the SSS model, so we won't create SSS materials for the current model.

As soon as the new SSS model gets finished, we'll produce a new collection of SSS materials.

Greetings

Also, I've noticed that the volumetric effect from 1.7 is now gone :(

So, it would be REALLY, really nice to have it back with a new SSS model

+1,000,000!!!!!!! yes this needs to come back ASAP!!! (but we prob won't see anyting for many, many moons :( )

I hope they redo the SSS and add in some true volumtric env fog (and even fluid/gas sssVolumetric materials that can be used with particles --either from realflow or even ANY particles from maya fluids/nparticles,etc)
