The problem you are experiencing is directly related to geometry subdivision. If you use a heavily subdivided plane, with relatively uniform faces, your displacement will work as expected. Displacement just doesn't perform well on geometry that has large faces or unevenly sized faces. So subdivide your geometry and try it.

Also, smoothing doesn't affect the displacement settings, it's for when you apply the displacement to a curved surface.

I have tried in Sketchup -- and I found that you really need to subdivide the geometry (I use subdivide and smooth from Smustard).

I can email you my test scene if you like.

Also make sure the image you use for the Sketchup material has a different name from the displacement map or you will get low rez.

*Edit: adaptive works fine.*

Jason.

alright so it seems there were quite a few problems going on, one being the adaptive and precision settings, and then once i solved the spikey thing, sketchup decided to link my textures all incorrectly. I think it's done now, thanks so much!

Glad we could get it sorted -- I'm sure that will pop up again in the Sketchup forum so It's good to know it works... I will also be covering alot of those issue in-depth when I finally get the Sketchup plugin video series underway.

Best,
Jason.

Apart from the subdivision issues in SketchUp, you can also get the look you want by increasing the Precision value, in that Displacement settings.

With a non-subdivided plane you may need to use a high Precision value (60, 100, 200, or over) to force Maxwell to refine the mesh better during the render.

If the mesh is previously subdivided, that high value may not be necessary, and a lower Precision value can be enough.
