not that other updates wouldn't be welcome as well ... ;)
but a properly working render engine is much more important. so thank you very much for the fast solution.

Hmmm, I seem to be having difficulty installing the patch.
I'm getting an error opening the file for writing:

C:\Program Files\Next Limit \Maxwell 2\maxwell.shell_x64.dll

does anyone have any insight into this?

I'd post a pic of the error message, but I'm a bit of a forum twit when it comes to posting images.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers,

Thanks for that Polynurb.

I hadn't run Maxwell this past session, but after rebooting - your idea of checking my task manager reminded me how Maxwell really doesn't like my Wacom tablet. So after stopping all the Wacom processes I was able to install the patch fine.

Thanks again!

More and more I appreciate how Next Limit is dealing with Maxwell developing.
I read feature list and I believe is the list of what I thought needed to be done.

Great the output paths macros

I just read this in the update's release notes:
"IMPORTANT: the Maxwell Render license key (license.txt) is now located in:
- Windows:<MyDocuments>\Maxwell
- Mac OSX: /users/<user>/Maxwell
- Linux: $HOME/Maxwell (i.e. /home/<user>/Maxwell)"

Since I have a multi-user environment, is this change going to be a problem for me? I have multiple people logging into workstations during the course of the day to render and there is no way I'm going to give them access to my license file so they can copy it to their user directory nor do I want them asking me to install the license for them after their user profile gets created on each workstation. I like the way the licensing currently works where i just make sure the license is in the app folder and every can render without any hassle.
Also, would this affect my render farm which renders as a service? You can't check a user directory for a license when no user is logged in after all.

I'm not sure I understand if this is a problem since they could copy your license file from the Program Files folder before. Regarding multiple users and nodes, Maxwell can still read the license file if you have permissions to read that folder, independantly if the user is logged in or not. This change was made because it caused problems for many users with newer OS like Vista or W7 because of permissions to read the Program Files folder. If you run into any problems because of the new license file location please contact sales@nextlimit.com and they could help you with a custom solution.

My current setup works well because even though I have a lot of different users logging onto these workstations I never need to get involved when they plan on rendering since the license is always sitting in the Maxwell directory. My users also don't steal my license files because 1) they don't know they need one since it always works and 2) it has the hidden attribute set on it.
Moving the license path to some where in the user's profile now means that unless I can hide a copy in the default user profile I will have to provide instructions to all of my students on how they can take care of this for themselves. I think we can all agree that not all users will be able to handles this as some of them can barely figure out how to send email.
I think a better solution would be to check both the old and the new location for the license file. This should allow your new change to work for the people who need it without breaking the way I still need it to work.

Hi there,

Not sure if you've read my post as I had a similar problem. Maybe the answer I got will help you to fix the problem as
it fixed it for me (at least for now as I've downgraded to 2.0.2). Well, have a look anyway.
