I've just installed v2 and have noticed that there are far fewer materials than there were in v1.7.1. I know that 1.7 materials are compatible with v2 but I'm guessing they're not as good / fast?

Are there any plans to reissue the entire excellent v1.7 library rebuilt for v2? It would be a shame for new users to v2 not to have access to all the materials in the v1.7 library - some of the standard materials I still use in scene, they were great!

Also, are the additional Arroway textures that were available for 1.7 as an extra download going to be available in the same way for v2? I've just watched Mike's great materials tutorial and noticed that has was using v2 and had a full library of materials and Arroway textures. Or has he just copied them from his 1.7 directory?

Have another look at the file structure in the material database. You'll notice textures/arroway and mxm/arroway_v2 ...

yes, there are fewer materials and I also wonder if to use the 1.7 materials is not somewhat lacking something - the mats might be different than some built directly for 2.0, or am I mistaken?

Any 1.7 materials will be converted to V2, it's not the issue. We removed the old material library because it was mostly repetition of the same type of material, just a change in color. You can easily create these, and better looking ones with the Wizards. So we decided to start fresh and include a smaller library of materials but good ones and more varied which also gives users an idea how to create different types of materials. There are a few more changes in V2 material system that makes fresh V2 materials look better than 1.7, for metals for example, try the new Metals wizard and you'll see Force Fresnel is on and uses the new 'K' parameter which really is necessary to have more convincing metals. Try especially the new car paint wizard, gives you great results in a few clicks. The arroway ones are still there ofcourse and the zip with the extra textures will be available soon in the gateway download area.

Besides to what Mihai has said, now that there is direct connection with the MXM gallery site, increasing a lot the size of installers and the minimum space in disk required does not seem a good idea, this new way is more practical.

Not sure if I understand you.. do you mean a quality measurement apart form the already existent "rating" field? (by the way this rating field is visible in the MXM gallery panel in plugins and Studio so you can search by rating inside your app as well)

Yes, we have worked a lot in the automatic conversion of old materials, they will render fine.

Thanks,

thx!
yeah, I meant both ;)
Didn't look close enough at the new resource thing. But a rating system seems good.
Remembering the old mxmgallery, I usually had to download 5 to 10 similar materials until I found one, which was working good. And I was a bit afraid that I'll stay this way with all the old materials still available. (also still some with the 1.0 SSS system which don't work at all)

ah found them all! excellent thanks.
what is funny at the moment: I can load the Arroway materials but almost all render as a very dark material. There is no indication that maps are missing and such... so I couldn't use the ones from 1.7 to replace missing ones. Why is there no indication? And when do we get the maps/materials?
