I'd loose the vrayish bit, but yes, it kinda looks like an old school raytracer from the good old days.

as long as the sponge goes, I doubt normal map would help a bit. I guess that to look "right" it would take either a heavy displaced object or a sculpted/modeled one. or both sculpted and displaced.

totally agree with you, but at least a normal map can make it a bit better without re-model the sponge

Boy, something is very weird there... I would never have picked that as a Maxwell render. What's going on with the towels, especially? Are rendering options unchecked, or... what's this lit with? .... Really strange.

Sorry, I gotta throw the flag on this one...

I have to agree with Mike. Its looking really great, but, is this really a maxwell scene? It looks really CG... It was the first thing that came up to my mind, before I read Mikes mess... :?:

EDIT: And when looking at earlier posts, I notice, its not the first time you get that question. Are you sure You are in the right forum posting your renders??

I would be extremely surprised if these are Maxwell renders...sorry but they look really strange. How did you light this scene?

Pierre, these are very nice visualizations but the executable I have wouldn't be able to do the same. Is this a joke? :) How can you achieve such surrealism?

I'm sorry guys...this is a maxwell render lit with an mxi...
I did not realize it was that bad...
Rendering should be just a little part of my time and I spent much more time than I should to achieve this poor result...I think I'll give up with Maxwell since I'm lost with it and anyway I promise I will not hurt your eyes again with such images

Why sorry? :o Instead, I would like to see your settings. I really need to know how you can achieve this look. Can you share your material settings? Also, how much time did you spend for the renders? Can you show how do they look like in 5 or 10 min? I ask this for MXI performance purposes, because environmental lighting should be very fast.

Which material settings do you want to see ?
The rendering time was acceptable (for maxwell) 24 hours to reach SL17 at a resolution of 2400x1800 and no noise and I know it's due to the fact that I used a mxi (and that's actually the reason why I used this method...)
The time I spent is month and month trying to set materials, lighting...and today here is what I'm able to get...

I wouldn't say it is awful. There is definately a difference between the realism achieved on pg1 with your first few images, and the last two you have shown. The two things that jump out at me are the towell and lights seem washed out. The razor material also does not look real. Did you do a lot of post work to these in Photoshop? Also I have found that while MXI lighting is faster it makes everything look flat and too evenly lit. I think this is what you have going on here. Are caustics turned off? It seems like there woud be some off of that mirror with lights so close by, but I could be wrong. Im not a caustics expert. Dont give up though.
