Yes... I do.

Zuliban :: this is great modeling you show us here... any chance you can show the process in more detail. i sure would like to know how you did it.

Mihai :: no problem... i'll show the process of creating the columns. SKP format with pages OR PDF with images ? what do you prefer ?

I think pdf will be more portable? Maybe in time you can expand it and have a nice Sketchup tutorial on your site:) I'll do some quick screengrabs in XSI then for the column bit and post it here.

Well, here is the XSI way :) I tried to make the instructions pretty detailed so you can get an idea if XSI's workflow but some things like camera navigation just look in the manual, it's very good.

Order top row>Left to right>bottom row>left to right.

Here is how i do it in SU hope you find this informative.

General notes are ::

copy rotate -
using the rotate tool with CTRL key will copy selection,
after just use X or / with a number in the input box for making an array
using the copy vector.

follow me -
when using this tool with ALT key pointing on a face the follow me
will revolve that face

construction lines -
use them!!! they are a great help

if i left something out please let me know

as an end note i can say that the entire bottom part of the column can
be created using on follow me operation on a section describing that part.

Thanks guys there great tuts.
I really like the accuracy of sketchup, the first pic, starting with a circle, then arraying the little circles around the edge of the big circle. Means you get perfect semi circles cut out of the column. I'm sure you could do it this way in XSI too.

thanks

Thanks for the interesting tutorials. But why dont you simply draw the silouhette line of the column and lathe this. Than build the capsule, rotate and copy it, and use boolean tools to cut out the other elements ?? Seems much faster to me. Just curious....

You have a point... i stated this fact at the and of my post. there are many ways in SU to do this, i just showed it this way to present some more tools, and sometimes - for me - it's better to model as i go along so i can see what i get during... but drawing a section and revolve it is OK and FASTER at most.

Here's another method. I love subdivision stuff. This took about 5 mins total and is a very simple method.

1 - simple profile

Image

2 - lathe @30 segments

Image

3 - Edit poly> inset the faces a little and bevel inwards. Weld verts, select edge-ring and connect with 2 segments. Adjust divisions up and down.

Image

4 - meshsmooth

Image

5 - shaded view

Image

6 - 3 minute render
