I always prefer using HDRI's for lighting, but the down side is that the Multilight feature becomes useless since all the lights in the HDR are treated as one light layer.
That's why I usually render out different lighting setups and then bring them together in post-production.
That's actually a good idea. As I also mostly use HDRLS for lighting since it's super convenient.
