Was it something like shave and a haircut or some kind of fur, or a displacement?
Was made it with Hairtrix, very similar in this case at shave and haircut, and with a thin sss shader works very fine with rim lights.

I didn't use any caustics, but the noise don't come from here, I decided switch off all caustics, but just for an artistic decision.

My advice for the smooth renders, is to think like in photography, if you are in a closed room with only one point of light, that have 10% as direct light and the rest as indirect, you will have noise in your photo, that's means you will have noise in maxwell or artefacts in other engines, so you will need more render time to clean it.

That is the reason why in the movies, the director of photography, make a good setup with reflectors and soft lights with smooth shadows to the dark and complex zones, to get info and control in the "blacks" as possible, to obtain the image with the least possible noise, and later in post-production you always can to push this dark zones to black if you want, but you will have in general a better smooth images, with the critical zones much cleaner and more control in the way that the light works in all scene.

I know a very short list of movies without this kind of lighting setups to help to the natural or artificial light of the scene, one of them is Lost in Translation, you will see a lot of noise in each shot, anyway for me that's is not a problem, in CG normally in VFX and in animation sometimes too, in postproduction they add noise to get the final look, more cinematographic.

Well, I know in some cases you can't present a work with noise :) so I hope my advice helps you something to get less noise ;)
