Hi Cary, I've been hunting your posts down on the forums trying to learn as much as I to render jewelery and I think your work is fantastic!

Two questions for you.

1. On your second pic how is it that you have the black ground faded into the black background?? Is there photoshop work there to blend the two?

2. HOW IN THE WORLD are you doing renders with a white ground surface????????? Every one of my renders comes out with this slate gray ground plane even if I apply a glossy white material to the ground plane!? Please help, the quality of my work vs time I have spent doing trial and error has NOT paid off :/

Hi Jay- Thanks for the compliment!

The only photoshop work I do is levels or brightness, I have never used a transparent gradient to mimic reflections of jewellery on a shiny surface. I just don't have the time to fiddle with my renders so I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to do it in one shot.

Early on I spent a lot of time studying posts here for product photography tips and then applied those findings to my jewellery. I also picked up some books on studio lighting and photography and then mimic those techniques for Maxwell.

I think that you are having issues with your white for a couple of reasons - material settings and lighting. It looks like your lighting is very strong- the dispersion looks unrealistic. One tip I have found with rendering diamonds is that even though Maxwell has an .ior file that constrains the dispersion to real world values if you use NON real world values for your lighting you will get unrealistic dispersion in your stones. So I would check that the light being emitted is not 'out of this world'. :)

I have to run but hope that helps.
