Somehow the structure seems too heavy to be supported by such thin columns only in the perimeter.

Actually it is more than likely correct. This particular style of architecture is prevalent in Islamic countries and has a long history of development and refinement. It is just a different application of proportions.

I don't think this ceiling would hold though....
