Decided I needed a break from my work on my 'Decay' images for a while.
I've been intrigued as to how back lighting of human figures generates a sort of glow around them. After closely looking at several different photographs, I've come to the conclusion that this effect is mostly due to the SSS from the very fine hairs on the skin - as opposed to SSS from the skin itself. So I decided to experiment a bit to see if I could replicate this effect using Maxwell - without applying SSS to the skin.
For this test, I used 3ds Max hair. Rather than putting hair all over the body (which would have killed my machine due to the high poly count), I only 'grew' the hair around the edges of the poser figure that would be effected by the back-lighting. I still ended up with 1.7 million poly's...
Here are my results. The first one has no postwork - aside from resizing.
The second has some postwork to bring out some glare effects off of the shoulders. I think that the image could benefit from a bit of SSS in the ears, but overall I believe that the effect works well.
