Hi!

It's nice to see an image where someone is trying to make a statement of some sort. It makes a welcome change from the usual pots, pans, chairs and so on. Although.. I'm not quite sure what statement you're trying to make with this one! I have a lot of personal thoughts about it which I need not go over, and perhaps that was your intention.. Maybe you'd rather not share what your thoughts were regarding this image, either way it'd be nice to get some response from you regarding the subject matter. The man inside the syringe is very interesting..

However, I have a few points I'd like to make regarding the technical aspects of the image. I'll point them out in case you find any worth in what I say. Firstly I personally think the hand could be more expressive/dramatic. Secondly the sharp edges surrounding the thumb bother me a little, it seems to seperate that area from the rest of the hand, looks a little like a bad photoshop/selection even though I'm aware it may just be the intense 'blooming' of the light behind. Thirdly the forearm needs a bit of work imho, if you added some veins it'd add an awful lot to the image, especially near the entry point of course, and there's a numerous ways you could do it easily with bump maps/displacement maps or simply painting them if you have Max 7.. Although that'd obviously require a lot of sub-d's! :) Hmm, also, what if you indented the entry point of the arm, like the needle is pushing into the flesh? Just a few points for now, hope they give you some ideas on ways to improve it.

Bye, and thanks for all the free info on your website. It's been very informative. :)

well, this is a good concept but i think it failed because of bugs.

Thanks for the comments guys, much appreciated. There's room for improvement, but I've decided to keep the current essence of my message and not wait for another 24 hours. :)

Concerning the message: I like to leave that up to the viewers, to keep it mysterious. :) I always say: if an image raises a discussion, then it has been worth it to make it. :)

About the DOF: it seems odd around the thumb indeed, but it might as well be due to the light emitter absorbing the blurry light edge around the thumb because of the light emitter's intensity.

I'm very curious what NL's comment is regarding this.

Cheers,

Metin

But shouldn't the little man be mashed first in a blender so you can inject all the juices? Because right now some of the bones will just wind up staying in the syringe. Why waste? :P

Hi,

Hit reload for an updated version of the image. Improved the atmosphere a little. Well, at least for those who like the subject. I added a subtle drop o' blood and a little pinching of the skin where the needle penetrates.

By the way, this rerender lasted for 24 hours and was almost finished when I discovered Fran's thread about the disturbing nature of this image's subject. So this announcement of the new version is not meant to throw new wood on that fire. :)

Cheers,

How did you prevent the burnout of the dof in this new one? Just decreased the intensity of the emitter?

Great symbolic image MetinSeven. The concept could easily work
for any anti-drug campaign with the right copy. But the little "man"
shure looks like a little woman to me. :D

It would be interesting to see more work on the texturing though.
So you don't get stuck in "Poserworld". Here's an image for inspiration
(..or check out Digital Domains incredible work on Fight Club).

Thanks for your feedabck guys!

Mihai, about the DOF: the right way is to follow Tom's advice and lower the emitter strength and compensate the light loss with your fStop / shutterspeed.

My quick 'n' dirty fix was done in Photoshop afterwards though, using the great Lens Blur filter and adding some noise to avoid that area becoming too smooth as opposed to Maxwell's noise.

Halu, you're right: a bit o' texturing would be nice, but I wrestled too long with the messy UV coordinates that seem to come from Poser. Using the Obj format is the best way, but there is still some stretching here and there, maybe due to Habware's Obj importer, I don't know. I've once sent him an e-mail about it but don't think he ever really dug into the issue.

An alternative would be Digimation's GestureMax, but I find that a bit too expensive to buy only for proper import of static Poser models.

Well, I think the current texturelessness :) has a certain clinical, sterile, surreal, naked charm. :)

Cheers!

Yeah, I made that more obvious in this new version. :)
