well I haven't had the chance to test more cards, but I have ever had "gamer" cards and I could always work fine.
If you can afford a "pro" card it would be better because the drivers and the hardware are optimized for graphic applications.
You can look at http://forums.guru3d.com/ it's a great forum to search some infos... :)

ya, those Matrox cards really suck at 3D, we run our A?V computres with matrox, and they run premiere and aftereffects great, by almost any 3d app sucks on em, Matrox has serious compatability issyues, but like I said on a optimised 2D based machine they are great, now onto suggestions for graphics cards...

ATI vs Nvida

pretty much the two company cards you'll want to go with.
And If you run Dual Monitors to me Nvidia Is a CLEAR winner, any nvidia card will work, geforce cards are ok, they run good, for an affordible price, but I suggest to invest some more money and buy a NVIDA QUADRO series,, we run quadros 1100 and 750's which work great, Nvidia has been good at steadily updating its graphics drivers, and fixin bugs.

the nvidia software for its drivers are more versitile , lest you get in and make all changes on a monitor, to monitor level, and setup lots of tweks, and custom profiles.

ATi I have had not so great times with, not that they dont have great cards, but for dual monitors for me seems limited, and Ive had other issues running maya on their Radeon series.
But the FireGL series is also a great and fast set of cards for 3D.

So look into the Nvidia Quadros and compare em price and spec with the Firegl's

hope that helps.

I have a Quadro 1000 and it works fine!!
If you don't have enaugh money to buy a pro card, the gamer cards can handle it well.
