This is such an opened ended question its hard to answer, I wouldnt recomment it for animations, there are going to be speed improvements but I dont think they will be too spectacular, much cheaper computationally to fake it, and hey a great still image is never easy to produce, adding keyframes doesnt make you a genius! If you want speed maybe renderman for maya might be worth looking at.

hehe, I'm sure speed will get better but its not like other renderers, its physically correct, its certainly a pleasure to use compared to the hoops you have to jump through to use mental ray :roll: But maybe for animation it would be a killer, ofcourse depends what you're going to animate.
