But in reality, a lens shifting in its housing is not even remotely the same as film moving around in the gate. Film doesn't move around in the gate. Maxwell is based on, and will continue to be ever strictly based on, duplicating the conditions of reality, not virtual reality. So these sorts of distinctions are important. Plus, if you go around thinking that shift-lenses work by moving film around in the gate, you'll look like an ass.

I suppose some of the blame rests on Alias for naming it Film Offset if they meant Lens Offset, but that battle has long since been lost. In any case, it's not just a matter of terminology: moving film in the gate is different than moving a lens in the housing. On this planet, anyway. But obviously once virtual, you could name it anything you want. You could call it Image Realignment Modifier. Hell, you could call it Cheese Sandwich, what's the difference, right? The difference is that the Maxwell philosophy embraces real conditions, and real terminology. Plus, it's nice to have a clue.

Mike, I am not an architactural photographer, neither i have seen a shift lens camera.
Please, explain, what is the difference between moving the lens or the film?
Is it the fact that the lens system is titally different?
I just cannot understand the explanation like "it is different because if you don't agree with it - you look like an ass!"

mverta,

i really start to get worried about your comments.
it is interesting that you know it better than all others.
i myself studied for 2 years sientific perspective within my architecture studies on technical university of vienna, so sure i have no idea about those things, and i might look like a bad ass(thanks man)- you have the knowledge of course...

also on this planet we have had albert einstein and relativity;-)
buy a linhof take it appart and look what happens.

also in this planet moving the lense relativ to the film is the same as moving the film relativ to the lense. this has nothing to do with virtual worlds.

but if you hate the idea soo much and fight against it, can we maybe agree to have the common feature to render just a region of the full image? in studio as preview this works already.

thanks for your very nice and polite comments:-)
cheers
stefan
