I am looking for a painted metal deck material. I am new to MAxwell and really do not have any idea how to go about creating it. Any help is appreciated

Thanks for the picture. Those should be fairly easy to reproduce, there are numerous different methods you can use to create them, everything from modeling them and rendering out zdepth maps to paint the heightmaps manually in any paintprogram based upon the height differences you see in the reference picture.

Draw a spline in the shape you want and extrude it then apply a galvanized metal material to it. It will look better/render faster than displacement.

What I am first trying to learn is if this type of material is best done by modeling the material or by displacement techniques. The sense i have gotten from the responses so far is that modeling this and applying a material will probably work best. I am a little surprised because i woild have thougt this would be a good application for displacement which i need to learn how to do. any further comments suggestions are appreciated

Actual modeled objects will render much faster. Of course you can use displacement if you want, but these are such simple shapes, that I can't see the need for it. That's just my opinion.

Whatever you decide, let us see the result!

Hey guys, any success with this, I have been trying to create my own displacement maps, mimicking some of the ones i found on the mxm site, here's an example:

Here's my material settings:(apologies for the rough editing i was in a hurry)

And the result:

Any tips from the guru's?
There was a good article by tom about displacement, cant find it though.

Cheers

What resolution is your displacement map and is it 8 or 16 bit?
Higher resolution and 16 bit works better. Also, you might get smoother grades if you raise the precision.

Hey Bubbaloo, thanks for the fast reply yeah its only a test map, there seems to be extra geometry where there shouldnt be, i wasnt sure if it was my texture mapping skills  or the material settings, the mapping doesnt seem to line up with what i'm getting:

I have some sheet metal material i want to upload to the mxm site, but i want to get it right first.

Thanks for the help, appreciate it..
