AGS is confusing me - how can it appear transparent when the transmittance on 2 layers is black/opaque?

Also, i've forgotten exactly why it was created - is it just a glass material that cleans up more quickly and easily allows sunlight through? Other glass materials allow through sunlight - how is this different?

Additive seems to make a big difference when using transmittance at 0,0,0 on layers.
