since the beta version I have been messing with mxm and textures, and all that stuff is cluttered and scattered all over my harddisks. some are in project folders, some are in dedicated texture folders, tucked away in subfolders, usually with the name of the texture on it.
this has become very cumbersome, so I decided to organize. only to find that it is an impossible task.
the options:
1. put every mxm in 1 folder, all texture images in another. this means that those folders will grow and grow, and become very tough to handle or browse. it also means, to keep it structured, that some renaming of mxm/textures needs to be done, since there are files called 70fabric005 and others like Blocchi di tufo poroso, whatever that might be. so there is no structure, and renaming files like "concrete_rough_001" would make things simple, but this is a tedious job, and I don't have time to do that.

2. keep everything in folders, and creating subfolders for concrete, bricks, fabric etc. this is neat and tidy, but if I need to render an mxs on another platform, the references to those mxm files are lost, and it takes a long time to reassign all those materials.

3. your idea maybe?

thanks

materials management is a real chore in MW. I hope they find time to automate path management!

I'm going to put all of my MW mats at the root of drive C:/ that way there's less clicking when you have to reassign a map path.

I think I'll post a question first though as I don't want it to make things worse.

Cheers

Maxwell automatically looks for missing textures in a default folder. I don't have it on my machine here at work, but I think it is c:/nextlimit/maxwell/mxm database/textures

I haven't remapped any of the path names for a while now, I just drop all textures there. It becomes a problem with network rendering though. I am trying to work that out still. If I can assign that path then I will place all materials on my network drive.

I have the same problem here, sure that the best solution for now is to place all your collection in the default Maxwell database root

well a stupid solution is to create a shortcut inside the root directory for where you store your textures... in case you are using a different drive. Not fantastic but reduces a few clicks...

Due to path management within Maxwell tools all my last project resources had shortcuts on my desktop, so it was just "desktop"click, "shortcut"click and you are in maps, or mxi's, or jpg's etc etc

Wouldn't like to do that for multiple projects at once though, so it's not a long term solution... :?
