Dexel wrote:2) Please make sure the material naming is correct. Otherwise importing mxm into Studio will not work.
For example try importing the downloaded "P7F_Experimental_Mapped transmitance & coating.mxm" into Thomas' StandardMatTest..mxs". This won't work, at least not here, cause there is already a material called "preview" in the scene, and the P7F.. is also named "preview" in the MXED input field. After changing that text and exporting the mxm (save mxm is not enough), the import works.
This is a general design flaw that hopefully will be fixed soon:

Materials should not be referenced by name inside a scene.

Hi,

What a fantastic resource, I shall add some mxm's if i can get them good enough! :)

One little wish might be to do with the scale of the preview... The little object is great for lumps of wood, but wouldn't show how a wood floor might look...

Would an elevation with (for example) 4 tiles of the matt be a useful addition?

and discuss

I guess beta testers are certified.

When I try and render with adownloaded gallery .mxm texture, it can’t find the textures used as they are recorded referenced to the creators hard disk:

>> Checking Data...
>> Loading Bitmaps & Preprocessing Data...
>> Error: Bitmap File not found ( C:/Program Files/Next Limit/Maxwell/materials database/textures/HT_Brush_A.jpg )
>> Render Failed.

Do I need to open studio and re-make the mxm for it to work within a custom mxm in the C4D plugin?

Seems to be my material...so if you have installed maxwell on your C drive inside the folder program files, just create a new folder named textures at this location C:/Program Files/Next Limit/Maxwell/materials database/textures and paste the map inside. Then it should be fine, excepted for the complex ior that you need to relink to the good file. I will make an update tomorow to avoid that problem in the future. Sorry for the trouble, I will try to do it better next time .

Sorry, that yours was just an example, it happens on other .mxm files too that reference textures, and as I am on Mac, I don’t have a c: drive... so the path would be totally different.

I was hoping the .mxm would just be able to look for referenced files in the same folder the .mxm is in, without referring to file paths...

Is nobody else having this problem?

Dean,

try putting the texture maps in the Applications/Maxwell/materials database/textures folder. That is the default location on OSX and works well here. You can also specify another default path in Studio's Preferences. I also read somewhere that by default MXCL would search for maps in the mxm's resident directory as well. That is obviously not the case, not on OSX.

I like to maintain my own library structure and not believe in automatic texture map discovery.. so I see no "problem" in specifying the proper path myself.

I am having problems registering. The website takes all my details and then I get no email confirmation. I know that it partially worked, because it won't accept my username or email when I try and re-register.

I have emailed support, but have got no response. Am I doing something wrong?

Still no luck on the textures. Tried:

Placing textures in:
Applications/Maxwell/materials database/textures

Render still fails looking for texture on c: drive at parent path.

Tried also to set default path in Studio prefs, though not sure the renderer uses these preferences, as this didn’t work either.

There is a preferences in the renderer, but cannot access then (greyed out) so not sure whether there is a texture path default pref in there.

Dexel: Do mxms from the gallery with textures work on your Mac then?

They do, Dean. But I take the long way: edit in MXED and set paths to texture maps and iors - for Hyltom's stainless steel you need those too. No matter if it's the same ior on four different layers, you have to change all four.. Tedious procedure. But it works.

by the way maybe this has been mentioned but i have no time to read all posts:

please create thumbnail of materials per group. it takes some time to view them all one by one...

PS also everyone should get a point per number of downlads to reflect how popular the material is instead of depending only on voting... i am sure that's fair

Yup, just done that, it’s a shame Maxwell can’t look for textures from the Maxwell folder as root. Laborious process...
