This is honestly the first time i've really ever been able to say this about your tests...but something looks off. I'm not sure why though.

I think the texture feel a bit whacky for some reason. It feels a bit soft, almost low res (even though i'm sure it's not low res). I know this shot has REALLY high DOF with it and wood grain does have soft transitions, but it looks a bit low resish. I also almost feels like a procedural texture...but not in a good way. If that makes any sense.

The modeling seems a bit too exact and gives it a really "CG perfect" feel to me...even though you do have rounded edges on everything to not give it the hard edged look.

Show a ref shot you based your chess pieces off of and it would probably help feed back ALOT. With such simple objects the most minute details missed can make them not convincing.

looks like I'm in deep trouble here.. ;)

I'll make some thests with a new material and also try to set up a better lighting for the scene.

thanks for your comments!

I'll look at the wood when I have some time, in the meantime: the first test-rendering of a scene with some copper-pipes.

Thanks Thomas!

Bubba: I need some better UV/ unwrapping software to fully control the materials, but I'll look into it.
