well Max you're right... but as a general advice... all good maps are done by hand... so z-brush is no help.. 3d coat is no help, I am no help.. but your hand is !... and when I think you have a nice hand for drawing.. why don't you do it by hand..? it would be 100000% better.. sure.. because really the cavity map is just a simple color.. does not work right...

well my pov... :D

PS. I think I will add a "don't bite" to all my posts... maybe it's the world crisis fault.. no idea.. but even the bakery vendor next door has changed.. voilà... people are becoming way too sensitive... gonna fix that.. :D

btw, what effect has a freezing weather on metal.. Vs. very hot... that we should know about...

ok, I think I will create the AAAOM (Anti-Auto-AO Milicia..). lol... :D

Sigh, this is why so few people post their work on the forum. They get flinged poo on for doing so. I doubt i will post more of my work on this forum now.

Bubba: Okay..

zdeno: Yes that list by Tom, i guess we have to obey it now.

Richard: Yes the effect should ofcourse be toned down as i have explained and i have also explained my reasons why but it seems some people are still to thick to understand and accept this.

kami: Yes it has all those channels already and technically it's probably simpler to add this than any of the other channels in there already. It's just a matter of priority i guess.. odd thing is that Fryrender had a AO based dirt solution pretty much since the beginning.

Hervé: I disagree, Zbrush is a good help as it helps you quickly rough out a map you as a user can then refine and add whatever more details you want to it. If you wanna be a hardcore nerd then you can obviously paint all your own maps from scratch but that's not always necessary and required. As i have already explained a number of times in this thread i did not paint it by hand for these particular tests, it was simply to demonstrate how you could use the cavitymaps from Zbrush with Maxwell and the effect was exaggeraget so that people would be able to spot the effect the map has on the renderings. There is also no guarantee that handpainted maps would look any better than autogenerated maps, if you as a artist suck at painting textures then handpainted maps will do your work no good.
You do that.. add don't bite to all your posts Hervé, i'm sure it will look nice.
Freezing adds a thin layer of icecrystals on metal which changes it appearance, it affects how light is reflected off the metals surface.

hehe no problem Max, I get it.. but I've seen your drawings, and thought.. Magnus can do a mile better...

as for the AO cavity.. yep sure.. it's there... :D

anyway.. maybe try to alter one of the AO you have just to see how far can you go.. good idea no..? I tend to think that way.. When I think I am happy and done with a model, the reality says I am only 20% finished... maybe less...

I remember an interview I had in the past to get a job... the guy told me.. "I'd rather see only one single "perfect" image than a bunch of avarage stuff.."

The hint is to not give up.. I am after that "perfect" render for 15 years.... still only 80% to go.... if I can accomplish only one good render in my whole life, I can die with a happy smile on my face.. all the remainder is additional...

SWIM..?

ok ok, I reckon this was just a demo... I always go too far... heehe

Have a Nice Day Max.. 8)

Your work is fine, it's your attitude that needs improving the most. Any time someone comments negatively on any of your work, you throw a fit and your immediate response is a childlike, "I'm never posting in here ever again! Thread closed!"

Gimme a break. You need to learn to take the good comments and the not-so-good. It's a basic and necessary skill in this business. I'd be fired quickly if I lost my cool over any negative comment I get from my boss and/or clients. You should use these alternate perspectives to improve and grow as an artist, and not perceive them as personal attacks. Even at the very least, you can choose to disregard the comments you don't agree with.

Just checked this thread again, and I will have to check out this AO stuff. I posted a similar question to the Rhino plugin forum here a little while ago about rendering oxidized silver. Zbrush is calling me again :)

I bet Hervé cheats, as long as it's not on his wife.. :)

One recent personal experiments i did was to convert a few of my Maxwell materials to Modo, and i rendered out comparisonimages.
I have also shared them on the Luxology Share site for all users to pick apart and learn some of what can be done with the shadertree.
By comparison you can see that both of them came pretty close in likeness to eachother, both materials were equally tricky to setup but the Modo
one required more brainstorming for me to figure out how to setup the shadertree in order to get results as close as possible.
Maxwell's simple materialeditor showed how easy to use it can be in situations like this. Although i have no real issue with the shadertree in Modo either
the difference was noticable.

Nice :)
Glad to see to you posting some renders again, Max.
BTW, it was your 5500 post in here, so you used it wisely :D

Hehe thanks m-Que :) i will create something more serious and better than this soon. It's just that i had quite some time away from Maxwell and 3D in general lately for many reasons and i want more than anything to come back to it asap. I don't see that i have 5500 posts, it looks like i have less than that.. but thanks anyways. :)
