Is there a simple/quick way of copying the black and white map using grayscale (0-64 RGB values)?.. at the moment i'm having to select each dot and re-fill the colour.

Well for the angle map, yes.. I usually make my angle maps first and then levels adjust for the aniso/refl map.

There are a ton of ways to make angle maps like this.. I do things like use 2D particle systems to generate dots or in some cases I just make custom Photoshop brushes on multiple layers and adjust levels there, etc.

A good map is the key, but I find some of my most effective sparkle maps are just 3 or values of rgb, like 0, 32, 64.. with some variations then thrown in. You have to experiment with the density to find the right look you're after.

if you convert the black and white into grayscale first then duo tone specifying "black" as 64,64,64 and than convert it back to RGB it will limit the gray tones to 64,64,64.

great explanation mike!! makes me understand anisotropy much better!
