RESOLVED:

The culprit was the WebDeveloper extension. Particularly the "Disable referers" option.

Now the question is ... when I run Firefox in safe mode how come the settings of this extension were still in effect ...

good to know. I think this is due to the fact that some extension (such as webdeveloper, tab mix plus, etc.) directly act on the chrome attributes and this changes are independent from the extension itself (you can check it entering about:config in the address bar). I think there is a routine to revert back the changes only when you uninstall the extension.

autologin doesn't work here as well, while the cookie is taken. either in firefox or IE6.

Thanks jdp, yes that indeed looks like what is happening.

Also:
-If I tick one of the options and then disable the extension ... the option is still in effect and the mxm site will not work.

-The interesting thing is ... even if we go ahead and uninstall the extension, the mxm site still doesn't work ... which means (in this case) there was no action of restoring the chrome

I have a similar problem with Evermotions site, it has this autologin thingy and it never works with FireFox. Each time i access Evermotions page i have to manually feed in my login info and hit the button. Pretty annoying which is why i hardly go there anymore..
