The culprit was the WebDeveloper extension. Particularly the "Disable referers" option.
Now the question is ... when I run Firefox in safe mode how come the settings of this extension were still in effect ...
good to know. I think this is due to the fact that some extension (such as webdeveloper, tab mix plus, etc.) directly act on the chrome attributes and this changes are independent from the extension itself (you can check it entering about:config in the address bar).
