I've just come across this excellent Siggraph paper on creating 3D solid textures automatically from a single 2D image input;
http://johanneskopf.de/publications/solid/index.html watch the video, it's awesome stuff.

Someone has already written a plugin for Maya http://johanneskopf.de/publications/sol ... index.html and I am wondering whether this technique could also be applied to an XSI (sorry Autodesk Softimage!) plugin.

I use PixPlant all the time for it's truly superb ability to automatically tile 2D images and create normal maps. It would be fantastic if someone could create a 3D version of PixPlant that would create solid textures to avoid all that messing about with UV's!

There's also an excellent Siggraph Paper on a similar technique on the ACM Portal http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1186562.1015724 but I think you need to be an ACM member to view it.

I highly recommend becoming a member, it's only $42 http://www.siggraph.org/membership and you not only get access to all the Papers from Siggraph over the years (both as pdfs and as video presentations!) but it also gives you money off Siggraph attendance so you basically get your membership money back if you go!

Just wondering what the definition would be on those textures, if it would be ok to render say a 4000x4000 closeup of it. The examples showed kind of small 'seeds' that were repeated in a volume. One volume file is about 6mb from that tiny initial texture, how big would it be if the starting texture was around 2048 pixels?
