Hi all,

I just had a mediocre MXM gallery experience, and it got me thinking; this is all the more relevant because it is my understanding that under Maxwell 2.0 the gallery will be integrated into the plugins directly.

Here is what happened: I found a material that looked great in the preview. The description said this material was tilable. Well, this material was not to scale (easy enough to tweak) and it tiled very poorly: the seams are clearly visible.

So I went back to the MXM gallery to leave some feedback - not because I want to be a pain but because I would like to help make these materials as good as they can be. From what I can tell I can't leave feedback or a review of any kind. Also I can only leave positive feedback... this is great for making people feel good, but the risk is that without some way of indicating sub-par materials there is no control on the quality... The quantity of materials is starting to look good so perhaps it is time to start working on quality...?

Thoughts?

Yes, this would be useful! It's good that the system now only allows for positive ratings to avoid bad ratings for good materials from frustrated users .
But it could be helpful to be able to comment a material if you've found a problem...

I do see your point but then again that would amount to turning the gallery into another forum. Truth is I tweak nearly every material there especially if the material has a texture map. All of the textures come in as planar and I rarely if ever use planar mapping. Adjusting a map to tile cleanly takes very little time and doesn't really bother me. I have run into materials that just do not work at all but that's been rare and I just toss them and move on.

I see your point but I like it the way it is...although you can't leave comments you can vote for the ones you like. I generally look to those with the most votes first.

perhaps something more like an amazon.com rating would be good. Just rate the material 1-5 stars and show the average along w/ a breakdown of how many people gave what ratings. Amazon includes an area for people to explain their ratings too but I wouldn't mind scraping that.

Brodie,

I like that approach - the star rating system does give a good idea of how people feel about something. I see comments as useful ("this material needs a better bump map" for example), but I agree that they can get out of control.
