Hi,

There is a material on the mxmgallery called "Black injection moulded texture" which looks really good!

http://mxmgallery.maxwellrender.com/sea ... =injection

But, I don't understand how this material functions? It has a ref0 map, but the map is mainly white with a fine lined black pattern. As far as I can tell, this map doesn't show up when you render, yet changing the ref0 or ref90 colors has absolutely no effect either.

I would like to be able to change the color of this material, but I don't even understand where the color is coming from???

Thanks,

Kandor

I don't know what its creator wanted to do (maybe download 600 or 1500 mats all together), but it's quite an odd material. It's a transparent mat. (249 at transmittance > not ghost but almost) with 1nm attenuation distance which makes it opaque and dark where it's thicker than 1 nm. It gets its color from transmittance color (a dark white is black). If you rise transmittance units to meters and hit preview you can see it's transparent. The map at ref0 is virtually useless as the surface is completely transparent.

I would just erase that material from my library. :|

Hi, thanks a lot for that analysis!

I know it is a very odd material, but it does replicate what we call a 'light edm' finish on injection molded parts very well. It looks great. I just wish it were more conventional so that I could easily change the color...

Do you need it to be transparent?

You can have something very similar without transparency if you set ref0 black, ref90 white, transmittance black and the rest just the same.

If you need the transparent part you can set the color at the transmittance slot while adjusting the attenuation to your needs.

Thanks Fernando,

I don't need it to be transparent, I just need it to be white. I tried what you said, but the preview stays black always????

With ref0 black - ref90 white - trans black - Atte1 - Nd1 - r20 - anis50 you get more or less the same black material.

But if you want it white I would go for a plastic from the wizard with Shinyness 50% and Roughness 20%, 239 white for color and then, after the wizard outputs, change at the reflective layer this: ref0 to 239 and anisot to 50.

With that material, to change the color you just have to change the ref0 color at the lambertian layer.
