Do I need to do anything for emitters other than specify emitter in mxm? Also is there a way so that the plane the emitter is on does not show up in the render? Or do I have to "hide" emitters per shot? thanks in advance.

That's pretty much it - just adjust the luminance settings to adjust the brightness and color,

I can't speak as to how this is done in Studio, but within 3ds Max, just go to the properties of the emitter plane, and deselect the Visible to Camera option. This will hide it in the rendering, yet still cast light.
