To add something more tasty in my picture, i would like to see the coffee coming out from an espresso machine and falling down in a cup. For the cup i was thinking about reproducing something like that

But how to do it? Should i decomposed and make two different part for the foam and the liquid? Should i use only some map? or maybe some displacement for the foam?...well i have no idea how to achieve this. Can you give me some advice.

My thought was the same. To get the quickest result would be to use a map on the foam layer. There is so much subtle detail of the whites and browns that flow in and out of each other it seems like it would be such a pain with multiple layers and weightmapping to get this. Maybe one of the material gurus would know how to do this quickly. My first try would be a map with some low roughness for the reflections. A greyscale map where the bubbles are with displacement would add a little extra realism to it. Let us know how it turns out.

:D so kind of you, but i have what i need. Thank you!...I have just counted and during the past 2 year i have designed 18 espresso machine. So i think i should find one that i like

You need some SSS on the foam to get the highlight round the band of foam that rises up the sides of the glass.

I'd say it would be easier to just have displacement/SSS/decent diffuse map and a blend of two bsdf layers to get a subtle dull highlight, then just do the coffee proper as it's own simple(r) material, than try combining it all.

Nice benchmark image to aim for though. If you can match that it'll be a damn fine CG image :)

Sometimes it's just the better way. Shortest path to the closest target :)

... hey Hyltom, only the results is important... great image

So, is this a known issue?
