WIP (SL10) and my first posting so don't be too harsh please...

Modelled in C4D.

I'd like some hints as to how to get the graphics/text on the fascia and tuning dial.

Comments welcome.

Good start!

For the text, I think your best bet would be to create a layer mask (weight map) so you can set your text as any kind of material you want. The other alternative is to simply model the text as separate objects.

layer mask (weight map)?

you've lost me already.

I'll have a search round.

Thanks M.

Here's a quick example. Lets assume that your orange dial material used the plastic wizard, and has two layers. What you would want to do is to create a third layer for your text. The below image is a weight map I threw together in photoshop.

Image

Put this in each of the Layer Weight slots (all three), but invert it for the original two plastic layers. On your text layer, you can change the color of the text, or even use some sort of bitmap to create different effects.

You just need to make sure your UVW's are set correctly (I just used a planar UVW for the below example)

Did you use polar coordinate filter to get the circular text?

TIA

Well I can't get the bl&&dy thing to work!!!

Did you do your dialing knob in C4D and render out from there Michael? I've got the material working ok but placing it is proving very frustrating.

Are there any general rules about sizing textures that might help. I know that in C4D the dial disc is 63mm diameter. Could I make a layer mask that has some relation to that and then scale it down

Here's my layer mask

And here is one of the 'results'. If I set the projection to flat or frontal nothing shows at all so this is currently set to cubic. So the distortion is probably a result of that.

Image

I'll keep at it but it's getting very very time consuming just putting some text on that dial!!!

TIA

seems to have started working now. I had to make the dial an editable object and then generate uvw coords...

I'll have to make a quicktime movie to remind myself how to do it...wouldn't want to lose that amount of time again....

Thanks Michael, I'll get a render running tonight...:-)

latest image...

SL8.33 but looking good at the mo.

I ended up having to create the text in illustrator then exporting as dwg then importing into autocad to export again as 3ds...phew.

Bank Holiday weekend gone!!!

Cheers

Sorry you've had to struggle through this all day adri - been at work and haven't been on the internet till now.

I did the weight map in photoshop. Just typed my text and used the Warp, Arc feature. I simply estimated how far away from the edge of the dial I wanted the text to be, and left that much of a 'buffer zone' around the sides.

I did everything else in 3ds Max. Not sure how C4D handles UVW mapping, so I'm afraid I can't help you there. In 3ds max it's pretty straighforward.

I do like your latest result very much. Much prefer the back-lighting of the dial!

That dial starts to look good! Only question is, how do I know which station is it set on? Aren't you missing like a needle or something?

the needle is there but it's transparent on the original and also on the model.

I'll have to think up a strategy to reveal it.

Thanks

nice work. You just need to fix that repeating wood texture.

hi mate
its a good start indeed. i would remove everything apart from the mug and then zoom in a little and hit render and it should work out aok ;)
radio looks good but with some tweaks could be better.
speak soon mate :D

So, is this a known issue?
