I was eating brunch in a bar/lounge here in DC (Adams Morgan), and they had some prints on display and for sale. They had a card attached with a website for the photographer - which I checked out once I got home.

I thought they were so cool, I'd try to do something similar. This is what I've come up with so far - though I'm not truly happy with the wallpaper. I'm working on making some better ones that aren't so choppy and crude. However, the technique seems to be working well, now that I've gotten a procedure streamlined...

The sunlight system with the current Max plugin is really ticking me off though. I really hope they get around to fixing it soon - it's a real PITA trying t get the lighting right with everything all bass-ackwards..... :?

Anyway, hope you like, and any suggestions would be welcomed!

I like the atmosphere so much!

Just the wallpaper mapping (too flat) and it seems too "on pourpose" broken.

And, in the corner (wall floor) you normally have a wooden (or marble) stuff (that I don't know the name) to avoid dust do make paper so dirty.

But, really really good...

Thanks everybody! I'm currently doing some searches online to see if I can find some good "granny" patterns...

Here's another test using the same texture as before - without any dramatic lighting so I can see better what's going on. My tearing is a little better, but as Rickyx mentions, they still look 'on purpose' and forced. I think if I just focus on the most heavily stained regions - using a higher mesh there - I'll be able to get a little closer to realism.....

Ricky - I think the term you are looking for is a Floor Molding (sometimes spelled 'Moulding' or called a Kick Board). Once I get the wallpaper working right, that will be included. I may even throw in an old rusted radiator.

Back to the drawing board.

Thanks again for all of the suggestions!

Round three -

I found a nice old style wallpaper pattern and am much happier with how it's looking now. I've also created a couple of different stain masks so I no longer have to make a huge repeating texture of the wallpaper. I can now change the pattern to whatever I want.

I still need to work on my tearing technique though. I think I'm still getting too carried away and making it too complex. The increased density of the mesh has helped considerably and I no longer have that really obvious blocky look as before.

I do wish that Maxwell would recognize the 3ds Max, Double Sided material though. In order to make the backside different, I have to take my mesh and apply the shell modifier to it - and more than doubling my poly count.... :?

Anyway, I'm much happier with how this is looking. I'll be trying a couple of other different textures, and work a bit more on the tears. I'm also going to play around with an idea to make my meshes more efficient.

Once again. into the breach...

Well, I think I've finally gotten something that I like. I'm pretty happy with the modelling and the texturing is darn close. But holy cow, my brain is about to explode from the tedious-ness of it all.

My next task will be to work on the wall texture behind the peeling wallpaper. Then comes the crown molding (not too hard), then the peeling ceiling.....

I'm really going to need a break after this one.....

very cool... but if the peeling and destroying of the wallpaper is so strong, then I could imagine a hole in the ceiling (with plaster and wood planks debris...)

ps, maybe one paperband totally destroyed..? (btw, is it supposed to have burned..?)

Thanks Herve! The look I'm going for is water damaged from leaks and exposure to damp air - causing a lot of mildew and rot. So yes, I will have to pretty much destroy the entire ceiling - I'm thinking at least a couple layers of paint, some plaster, and maybe some old fashioned wooden lathing in addition to the rafters.

I'm now thinking of doing a sort of recessed/vaulted ceiling with some fancy plaster molding, but I'm not sure my modeling skills would be up to the challenge...

old fashioned wooden lathing ... yes that's it... I believe they lay down the wood, then sort of fill it with plaster..

one thing... maybe if it's water, then the dark parts are a bit to dark.. no..?

What is life without challenge.. you tell me Michael... :D

Been working on an animation sequence for my mother, so I had to put this on the back-burner for a while. Finally got around to working on the peeling roof, and threw in some molding for good measure.

Guess my next step is to find some furniture, and tear some holes in the fabric and stain it up really good and pull out some stuffing. Maybe snap a couple legs off of a table to scatter around the room.....
