Hi Folks,
I know this kind of render is very B O R I N G to most of you, but to those of us that deal with *stuff*, Maxwell is quite a delightful render engine.
This is a new pair of sterling silver cuff links, glass bead matte finish on the face and polished connectors (the name for that mechanical stuff on the back side).
The ease and speed of set up is a revolution for the people that do this kind of work. And the render time, is well, very acceptable. This one cooked for a few hours on a single core AMD 64 3800+. And got a little touch from my friend Jeet in PhotoShop.
Crits etc welcome.

Hi jeffg,
Its an HDR dome.
Those one poly rectangles just don't make it for this kind of render.
Fortunately, Maxwell offers the easiest jpg>HDR process I've run into.
Thanks for posting.

It's cool to see that Formica bump on the surface. Gives it a very authentic still life feel. My only two critiques are that the edges seem too sharp on the design, and the silver should have a warmer tone. The lighting of the metal is really gorgeous.

Hi Josh,

You're right, no cast sterling piece would have these sharp edges. The customer is cool with it, but any jeweler knows that aspect is not realistic. I tried and Rhino was not cooperative. Fillets are not its strong point. That aspect illustrates the fact that if a jeweler wants as realistic a render as possible, there are often two models. The RP model and the render model which takes finishing into account.
And right again, about the color. I used the silver IOR material and did not alloy copper in. That an easy adjustment. I'll see if 7.25 % makes a different.
Thanks for noticing the lighting and floor. Lighting is a soft box HDRI. As there is no DOF on the links, a floor with no texture give no sense of depth at all. So adding a texture helps a little bit in adding some visual sense to the scene.
Thanks for the feedback.
