Coming from somewhat of a photobackground, I would love to see a renderer such as maxwell, or any other unbiased renderer give you the option of placing these real modeled studio lights around to light your subject....although th catch would be, that at render time, behind the scenes (to save render time) it would not actually use the fully modeled lights to create the lighting, it would use an HDR image taken of these fully modeled lights.

It was you (i think) that said earlier in the thread that you like being able to work with with real lights like this because it gives you a better sense of what you're doing and working with. I agree. Too many times i've found myself doing lighting setups in maxwell and accidentally using RIDICULOUS light sizes/shapes/wattages etc, just because I have that option to do whatever I want. Sometimes it makes it hard to troubleshoot problems if you lose the sense of realism in the lighting setups you are using.

hell, sell these models, with an HDR of each lights and I'll buy them!

Bubba: That's right :D fryrender, the chocolate renderer! hehe

itsallgood: Hi and thanks for your reply :) good to hear u think it's easier to work with actual lights than with planes and boxes as emitters. But i doubt i will render out hdr's of these lamps. I have other plans, read below.. :)

I will hopefully cooperate with one of the larger camerastores here to get more specs and references on these types of setups and equipment. All this should allow me to improve the lamps, reflectors, diffusers and more. I have also started building tents and lights for macrophotography and jewelryphotography. On the tasklist are also special types of cameraflashes and more.. :) so yes i'm working hard on expanding this even more.

I look forward to seeing the full set of photographic gear you have in the making.

It will be well worth buying if this is what you are planning?

Thanks D7, yep it's gonna end up in a pretty big collection of studio equipment :) i got some catalogs and info from the camerastore today so now i got more meat on my bones and can finish this much better than before. :) my hope is that it will end up in a large enough collection of useful studio equipment to make it worth every penny for you guys.

I got access to internet now an hour a day at the library so that's where i'm writing this post from. But i worked yesterday on a basic macro tent for jewelryphotography and it's about finished now, some more tweaks needs to be done to the lighting but in general this pretty much finished. It's a cubical tent with semitransparent cloth that let's light through it's openings. And there are 4 studiolights now emitting light into the box.

Wires and renders below if you wanna see what it looks like, the ring models are not my own creation. I found these on the web months ago..

daros: Thanks, yes it turned out ok, but i'm still not 100% satisfied with it. It could look even better. :) and it will..

garbage: I'm glad you like it, but as you probably know i decied to sell this instead of giving it away for free. Even i need food from time to time, believe it or not.. :)

I ran a quick test with a Poser chick from Daz Studio, used a preset pose for her and exported her, set her up in C4D and rendered her with 3 large diffusers. Here are some examples of what it could look like...

naikku: Hehe, someone had to say it :D and you did it so well!

yanada: :D no dirty thoughts about Victoria, she's all mine. My precious! hehe ..nahh, go get her at Daz3D by grabbing a free copy of Daz Studio, she's a cheap chick.

As i were playing with Victoria... i completly forgot to post some new models.
Here they are.. 3 large flat lamps, these could be used for lighting large models such as cars and a large crowd of people like a schoolclass. The other octagonal lamps could be used to lit individuals such as Victoria above or a smaller group of people (3-5 of them) and other subjects of similar size and mass. The last thing is something called a Multi-Table, this relatively small setup has a stretchy cloth you can bend in almost any angle you want by adjusting the rig it's attatched to. And you can also mount a glassplane above it as i done here in my model (it's ofcourse removable and adjustable). This table is also fitted with a small lamp below so you can lit your subject from the underside and create some interesting lightingsituations with that lamp. However it requires a semi-transparent cloth to work. Something which is now difficult to do with Maxwell. I'm sorry! :(

Hey Maximus- your studio props look cool as hell!

I do have a question though...... if you are making renders of non reflective items what benefit would your studio props have over straight emitters- either mxi or just plane emitters?

I mostly render jewellery so I think that your studio props would be very helpful in creating realistic reflections on metal and other polished surfaces.

Have you considered also creating mxi emitter materials for your large softboxes? And also have you considered setting the emission strength for your props so that for a newb it would be easy to set them up at proper distances to achieve realistic results?

I guess I had more than one question ;)

Cary: Thank you very much :)

- The benefit of this is that all props are at full 1:1 scale which means they have realworld sizes, this is one benefit which helps you when you setup lighting for your model(s). The other is the much better feeling of working with actual lamps, diffusers, bouncers and all these props that you both get a better sense of scale during the setup process, your emitters won't be too big or too small, they will be just the right size. Furthermore if you have past experience from studiophotography this setup will help give you a easier transition into lighting your 3d models. And any geometry not visible in the viewport can you hide such as the tripods and stuff. I usually keep them in because they don't add that much extra to the total rendertime, i'd say hardly anything noticable at all.

- For jewelry renderings i think that they would add something to such models, but from what the research i've done on such photography it seems that most photographers use a type of tent such as the one i posted not long ago here. It's a special type of closed box they place all rings and stuff in, then lit it from outside the box and shoot.

- MXI emitter for large softboxes, yes that thought has crossed my mind but it has pretty low priority now. When everything is done then we'll see.. i might do it.

- Emission strenghts is part of my plan for this, it's a must for this type of setup to be useful for people. I have plenty of material and hopefully some of that covers strenght of these lights. If it does i'll do my best to translate it.

The only real BIG problem now is if people with other applications wanna use these models there might be and most likely will be issues with the size of the models i export and once users import them into their applications. Not all of them such as 3dsmax and Maya and Rhino can import at correct scale, they will need to be rescaled up or down to the correct size. :( it's a major drawback of this. And i can't provide scenes for all applications, only C4D and Modo for now.
