dd: 2006, ouch ok that's a while ago.. i'm sure i posted in it and as you dislike it when i comment in your threads i will not do that again. Btw, share your models again, i'm not so sure my models are capable of really pulling this studio stuff off properly. And your models will probably do the job better.

Joris: :) we'll see.. we'll see... i don't know yet what i will do and how.

djflod: Thank you! :) ubercool ? nahh.. i'm just a regular nerd like everyone else here.

For fun i let Maxwell chew on a highres 1600x1200 rendering while i did other stuff.. this one cooked for 22 hours using two emitters. The large softbox placed above the figurine and the inverted umbrella reflector placed on the right side and then i added a hdr for subtle secondary reflections in the small statue. I know the material itself is pretty boring, for some reason i chose a poor one when i had better one's to use. Oh well.. :)

Great renderings.
This last image has the same problem which all my renderings have.
The very front of the statue is out of focus. which f-value are you using
in this picture?

you need to move your camera farther back, zoom your lens in more and use a high fstop setting. I usually use F 22

naikku: Thanks, yes the issue with focus in the latest rendering. I know and i saw that when i rendered it but i didn't bother changing it as it would add a better sense of scale to the model. I used f-stop 1,4 for this and also for the other renderings to get a nice tight depth of field.

iker: That's.. very kind of you to say :o thank you so much!

itsallgoode: Good suggestion, thanks i will try that too.

frosty: Thanks :)

glebe: :) thanks man, i'm glad you like my virtual studio thingy.

Some quick news.. i'm gonna set this up for Fryrender now and render out some tests with it during this weekend. I wanna see how and if it works with that engine too. If you guys are interested in seeing those results they will be reposted on the Fry forum. But ofcourse i will be back and continue working on improving the Maxwell version after that, don't worry. :]

A small update on this, sorry no new Maxwell renderings now. But as i were working on the Fry version of this setup i decied to try a little experiment by posting the results on photo.net, one of the biggest photography forums online. And i got some very interesting and unusual feedback from them there, and i'm very glad i posted it there because their point of view differs so much from what 3d people comment on something.

Here's my thread if you wanna read :)

hey max
nice job, posting a rendering in a photo community :) your rendering really looks almost like a photo, you would have fooled me ...
what I don't understand is, what you mean by "very interesting and unsual feedback" and where the "point of view differs so much".
After your introduction I expected some nice comments on the image itself. But after all, half of the photographers just write "why does it matter" "I'm not motivated to give it any thought"...
cheers,
kami

This highlights and important issue with CG, and one I sort of butted heads with Mike Verta about, indirectly.

To most of the world, including most of my clients, what matters most is if the image is interesting. "Realism" is important, but for most of the world who take it for granted it is not the holy grail it can be for CG artists.

At the end of the day if the image is not interesting, or it does not communicate what it's intended to do, then it is irrelevant - however "real" the render is.

I'm not saying I agree that Max's render is uninteresting - just that I can see where the POV is coming from on that forum.

Thanks kami :) about the comments from photo.net, their feedback there is pretty unusual because most of them there are not into 3d, there are lots of oldtimer photographers there who only know 3d from movies and TV but have no real knowledge of it when it comes to photography as we on the Maxwell forum do. Which is why i value their somewhat odd comments quite a bit although many of them may seem pretty strange for us who worked with 3d for ages now. It's actually exactly what i wanted to hear. :)
