Well, I did this
Smoke material some time ago -
It's a semi-transparent material and although it has a colorful map/texture applied,
it reacts to emitters and their colors (see pics below).
As for the settings - you simply apply it to a plane and you're ready do go. It also renders really fast.
So, if you create a desired map in PS and apply it to this material, you might get what you're looking for
Just please note: I did this MXM back in 1.X days (I think it was 1.6), so I'm not sure how it will act in v2;
but there's no stuff like SSS in it, so it should not be a problem.
