I think the reason that no photo reference is needed is because it's such a simple scene and setup, that the only difference in render outputs will be due to render engines abilities. Adding a photo reference would only cause people to use the reference as a way to fake and take shortcuts to simulate the photo exactly. What I think Tom wants to see is a basic shader rendered in many different engines to compare results. Nobody said Maxwell's output in this challenge is that reference. It's just what Maxwell output. What can other engines do with such an easy scene and default materials?

yeah, there's a plane in there. i used a vray light in its place... for some reason i couldn't get the light to align with the plane properly... lo siento

edit: here you go
Vray Scene (Max 2009)

like i said earlier, i'd like to see someone else take a stab at it for a better result/comparison/ability/pride/ego/what have you...

Btw, I'm still waiting for your dragon and red cup contributions.

Please, do. There's also another scene #2 ;)

I have to mention, Maxwell setups of both tests took several minutes, even including modeling of the cup. :)

And the first one took several minutes, even including modeling the dragon, right? :D
