Thanks for all the kind replies so far..... started rigging the hydrant yesterday. Here is a quick study from this morning.
Have added a few more controllers.
All fairly new to me so trying to work things out as i go. ..... More soon...

Re-mapped the mesh using pelt mapping. Earlier images shown were mapped with basic cubic uv's...
