Hello boys and girls!

I am experimenting with the creation of african masks using displacement.
I'm using simple spheres and planes to apply displacement maps to in order
to avoid creating a complex model.

I would like to compliment the displaced sphere with an additional element...
a straw or yarn material to make it look like the image found here:

Can anyone suggest an approach to the creation of the straw look that would
be relatively quick to render?

I'll post some test renders of my mask progress in a couple hours.

Maximus...this is a great challenge for your imaginative mind!

Interesting experiment BPD :) and your approach with only primitives instead of modeling is definately gonna be a challenge.

I been looking at that mask you linked to and can think of numerous ways of creating it, the path i would choose is the Zbrush one on a lowpoly basemesh, but that's just me..

Now for the straw, that's gonna be a bit of a bitch to do depending on the method you choose.. i can think of a few easy ways and a couple of difficult ways to solve it :) it all depends on how much trouble you wanna go through, and what tools you have. But i guess you wanna try the "clipmapped-straw-texture/dispmap-mapped-on-lots-of-randomly-placed-planes" method. Or you could use a hair plugin which generates polygons which Maxwell can render and then simply use that for the straws.

Btw, i always enjoy a challenge :D ..and it seems you know me quite well already BPD hehe

I once used a similiar approach for an african statue (which was in the very far background) .... it worked more or less fine, but not "great". I could post my results, if you like. And I'll surely be interested in your results.

kami...

I'd love to see your renders of the african statue.
Please post them.

So, is this a known issue?
