it should be, max2008 doesn't need a recompile for plugins. AFAIK it's not out so don't get too excited!

Is it me, or MAX doesn't change from one release to the next? Unless you belong to the 0.01% of the users that need some improvements in animation, particles, mental ray etc.

AutoDesk is growing so much that doesn't have the luxury of being honest and release something new every year... They just show a new release, improving some things that could be already included 2 years ago but this would be bad for marketing because they must not add to the software more than 2-3 new features every year...
So, we don't get the feeling of using something new any more... I experience exactly the same with Revit Architecture... The exception to this was ACAD 2007 because basic and useful 3d commands were added.
But, please tell me if you can, why we already have ACAD 2008 in 2007?

No matter what we say about NL's communication or bad marketing or... we have to accept that these guys work to release something new! Not just Maxwell 1.5.2.3.5 which is exactly the same with 1.5.2.1.3 but with one button less in the toolbars.

Max 2008 was released yesterday (October 17th). It does not require a recompile of the plug-ins, so the Max9 plug-in will work in Max 2008. The next build of the Maxwell plug-in will support Max 2008 explicitly in the installer, but in the mean time you can simply point the current installer to the Max 2008 directory when it asks for the Max9 directory and it will work.

sounds like one of those autodesk conspiracy theories. I think you will find that the max deelopment team is working extremely hard to bring annual updates.

I think you are probably right. You just can't do enough to make people happy. Change too much and they freak out, don't change enough and they moan. Of course it's also very unlikely you will change the right things anyway, so you probalby can't win in any case

I saw a couple new features of Mental Ray that Zap presented at Siggraph and they were very impressive. I look forward to this release.

I just copied "maxwell.dlr" from the 3ds max 9 plugins folder to the plugins folder in 3ds max 2008 and it seems to work fine.

Brett, it's really not so much a real time preview. It's real time shadows in your viewports. Which is very cool at that.

The coolest feature is the new sky portal which comes in very handy for interiors. You can also unlock some great shaders that come hidden at the moment.
