I've been working in Max 7 with the V1.1 plugin up until this point but now I've got Max 9 installed with the latest plugin. When I try and open any scene that I have previously created Max crashes before it even finishes opening the file. I thought that the new plugins were supposed to be compatible with the older versions, is this not the case?

We are aware of this Max9 translation problem, but due to one factor it's hard to find a solution. This one factor is one change made in the Max9 SDK, namely, the way objects reference other objects in the scene.

In practical words, the problem appears in the translation process, when the old cameras are being translated. As a workaround, you could open the old scenes (made with Maxll) using Max7, save the translated scene, and then open the translated scene using Max9. It should work OK. Please let me know otherwise and we will make our best to help you.

What do you mean by save the translated scene, save it as what?

Your scenes are made with the old plug-in ("Maxll"), right?

The workaround would be to install the new (1.0.79) plug-in in Max7, open the scene in Max7, then save it (preferably with another name, if you want to go back to the old plug-in at some point). The resulting file will load OK in Max9 afterwards.

I see....are there any problems opening old scenes made in Max 7 with the new plugin or is this problem only occuring when using Max 9 to open old Maxwell scenes?

It only happens in Max9 because, as Bogdan said, Autodesk made some changes to how Max works and didn't care about breaking old plug-ins. They didn't bother documenting how to work around the newly introduced problem either, they simply left it to the developers to figure it out by themselves.

The new plug-in has a translation step that is triggered on every scene load if there are some old entities (cameras, utilities etc) found. If you open the old Maxll scene in Max7 using the new plug-in, and resave the file (with the same or with different name) you'll have a translated scene. By opening this translated scene with Max9 (new plug-in), the translation process is not triggered anymore (since there are no old entities left to be translated), so, if your crash is due to the camera translation step, you should open the file without problems.

Is this problem going to be fixed or am I going to have to "translate" every Maxwell seen that I've created in the last year?

We're looking for a solution, but we don't know if one exists. We'll ask Autodesk, but from experience they're extremely slow with answering and when they do answer they say they don't know.

Autodesk people are b*****ds.

I (together with thousands of people from architecture practices) have been wanting to change from PC to Mac for lots of years now, but unable to do it because Autodesk simply won't release the Autocad program in Mac version.

They are surely getting money from Microsoft for doing this.

I don't know what to do at this point as there is no way for me to work in Max 9 since all of my scenes have been created in Max 7 up to this point. I really need some help.

5% Apple market share, isn't such big.
For Autodesk, It's clear a financial questeion than a religious.
(btw. there are some applications like combustion, cleaner or Maya available on mac from adesk)

This worked for me as well....could it be something involving the old Maxwell Cameras ?
