Does anyone use hair & fur with Maxwell? I need it for grass.
I tried a simple scene, but there was an error, Max crashed and after that I wasn't able to reload the scene.
I transformed the elements to mesh, I deleted "Hair & Fur" from the effects list (envir. dialog), so I guess it is probably a memory issue. What is more strange is that I can't even load the auto-backup file.
Has anyone experienced similar problems?

First of all, in order to use anything with Maxwell you'll first have to transform it to mesh :).
Second, since Maxwell can't use after effects, all the elements from the Effects list are ignored, and the only benefit you'd get by deleting them is not having Maxwell Verbose Translation window telling you that there are some warnings in the translation process.

On the other hand...
1. What was the error message you've got? If it's possible, could you please send me a scene in which I can reproduce the problem? (bogdan.coroi@gmail.com)
2. What error do you get when loading the auto-backup file?
3. Here is a picture of hair&fur in all its glory :) http://img413.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hairfurvo7.jpg

Back in the old days (not sure that is nessary any more) a way was to:

1. Convert to geometry (from inside the Hair and Fur modifier)
2. Turn of the Hair and Fur modifier
3. Turn of Hair and Fur render effect
4. Apply a Maxwell material to the hair mesh object
5. Render

4. Apply a Maxwell material to the hair mesh object
5. Render
Only step 1 is required in order to use Hair&Fur.
Step 4 is optional, since without using it, a default maxwell material is created and applied to the mesh. (The default maxwell material will have one lambertian layer, with Reflectance 0 using the mesh's wireframe color.)
AFAIK, steps 2 and 3 were required in the old plug-in because of a crash, but that's not the case anymore.

Thanks for your answer Bogdan, I will try again.
BTW, when trying to load the auto-backup file I get the classic "fatal error,... the app will close, ...will try to save..." but didn't save, it was not possible to save.
So I lost both the initial file and the auto-backup

I saw the file you sent me, I believe it is a matter of size... I guess it should be a "not enough memory" error but instead I get a "fatal error" and the file is destroyed.
I will be back after the tests.
Thanks again

...after the tests.
It seems everything works fine, you're right, you just need to make hair->mesh and it's ok, I tried misc sizes and it chrashed when I asked for a 500.000 grass blades, multistrand too... So, it must have been something else... Can't figure out what since I don't have the scene.
