A client want me to use Power Solids addin (from http://www.npowersoftware.com) for importing a stepfile (from ProE) - and render a photorealistic image of the model.

I would like to render with Maxwell but it seems like Maxwell does not recognize the inherent smoothing of the model, and it renders it with rough edges. When rendering with other renders like Scanline, Brazil etc. it renders out fine and with smooth edges.

Any idea on how to setup Power Solids for use with Maxwell ?

Thanks

Hi Lars,

In the Rendering Approximation rollout of the Editable Brep object, switch to Use Viewport Mesh. In the Viewport Display Settings rollout, use the Fine mesh quality preset. You can do this globally by selecting all Breps and using the Brep Object command.

Maxwell only uses the Viewport Mesh as far as I know.

No problem. But I realized that my version of PS might be older than yours. I recall that they changed the command name, so check the documents if you can't find it. The function is still there though. ;)

I forgot to say:

- I use the latest trial version of Power Solid 3 and for some reason the parameters you mention have no effect in my installation (the documentation/VTM also says that changing between Coarse, Medium og Fine in the Viewport Display Settings should change the tesselation on the fly).

- I found a solution to the problem by importing the af Step file (Brep .stp) as "Fine" viewport mesh quality. So now I can render with With Maxwell through Power Solid :-) Its still a bit annoying that I am not able to change between Coarse, Medium og Fine in the Viewport though.

Thanks

Hi Lars,

I'm glad that works. When I import breps from Rhino, I always set viewport meshing to Fine in the import dialog. I usually have to manually set Use Viewport Mesh in the Brep subobject. I think it's a bug with the 2.3x version. They must have fixed it. 8)

Hi Frances,

Just got a reply from nPower Software and they are aware of the problem and are very open about it. They say that there is a funny issue with the currently released version that those display updates don't always update immediately. Sort of a refresh problem. I still can not get it working (trying to enter values in fields and hitting enter to force a refresh as nPower Software suggest)

Also tried turning on/off the Use Viewport Mesh as you suggested with no luck.

Anyways, I have it a Fine resolution in the viewport as I said so I can render it with Maxwell .. even thougt it makes the scene a little heavy to work with :-)
