I've ran into this problem a few times, always when importing from another program like cad or sketchup. I belief it has something to do with having an incorrect UVW map/UVW map channels on an object in your model . Like coming from sketchup, you often have the multi-map(submaterial) kind of mapping and when convertin materials, if done improperly.. it scews that up. of course.. i am no 3d studio expert.. just started messing in it recently

for me it was definitely an incorrect UVW. Try to hide objects with UVW mapping and then unhide it one by one to find out the buggy one. reassign a new UVW.
I agree that this kind of error messagges are quite useless. :?
