Try clicking the tick box a couple of times. The first time you load a map, it dosen't usually take (even though from this screen it's on). Go to another material box and go back into your maxwell material to make sure it's been selected properly. This is a known bug with the Beta version (same applies to bump maps).

He should be OK. The Max teapot automatically has UVW mapping coordinates applied to it.

yes but he is using VIZ, you have to uncheck real world mapping coordinates for everything you do, they are not supported by maxwell, then your textures should show up
