Hi guys,

How do I simply change the background color for a Maxwell render from 3ds Max? Please don't tell me I need to create a HDR/MXI texture with the color I want just to change the background color?

Thanks and cheers,

Thanks! But when using a skydome color I assume the background color affects the render? That's what I don't want. I just want to change the background from black to white or a different color.

Background color ???
Use any lighting condition you want, save alpha image too, make a new image as you want it, just a flat color of your choise and then combine these three (render, alpha, background) in Pshop

But I just want to change the background color and render, no Photoshop. :) It seems that Maxwell is too complex for such simple tasks. ;)

how about placing a flat plane in the shot that fills the camera and make it the color you want?

Could be a workaround, but to make it a pure flat single-colored surface it would need to be an emitter, which will have a negative impact on the rendertime. And even if a diffuse material would work well, then it would still form an extra surface causing extra light bounces in the render.

Anyway, I think changing the 3ds Max background color should simply change the background color in Maxwell. If it can be black it can also be a different color that is equally separated from the rendered scene.

What? Are you sure? My goodness, what am I doing here then?! ;)

But seriously, Maxwell Studio is nice, but I prefer a workflow from within Max, and I have to say that Next Limit have done their best with MXED, which I thankfully use within Max.

Yep, I'll do that until NL has added the background color option. That shouldn't be too much hassle to add I guess.

yea it's great isn't it. All I have to do is set the scene up then I can tweak materials and lights from the mxed to my hearts content!

MXED sure is a breeze. I was quite reluctant having to shuttle between Max and Maxwell Studio, but MXED turned out to be my saviour. Now if NL would add that much needed matte material (combined with the option to set the background color), then I'll be a completely happy camper. :)
