OK some might say this is a stupid question but it is seriously halting my progress with Maxwell.

I have tried searching for threads but found nothing with the actual answer.

Basically i want to add lights to my scene, So i create an object and apply a light material to it. But i get nothing?

Is there any special rules to creating maxwell lights in max?

Am i being so stupid?

Does anyone know of any tutorials on creating lighting setups?

I have a theory that my maxwell scale might be wrong.
Anyway if someone could help then i cna actually start making some interesting renders.

Many Thanks
Christiaan

Hi Christiaan
You have two options:
1. set a phisical sky with sunlight / a skydome / HDR lighting if you want a global ilumination of your scene or..
2. Create lights. You have to assign an mxm material to the object you want to act like an emitter. This mxm material must have an emitter layer. You can mix this layer with another bsdf layers, but it's better to: create an mxm material, delete all bsdf layers and create an emitter layer
I've made some time ago a tutorial about emitter settings and presets:

Thank you very much that will help a lot.

I can't believe i hadn't found that i've been scouring the internet for ages.

I knew about the sky dome and sunlight systems and they are working beautifullly it was just that any light materials that i applied to objects seemed to have no effect in the render.

Will follow your instructions tonight and see what i get.

Hey Guys,

I am still not finding the use of Emitter objects as lights that intuative.
I have objects inmy scene with emitter material but it doesn't create any light in the scene. Using the lightmixer i can turn each one up and down and then it changes the lightness of the object but doesn't have any noticeable effect on the scene.

Can anyone offer a simple step by step process of creating a light for a scene.

I am using a system unit scale of 1 unit = 1 mm. Would that make any difference?

Or is there anything that i might be missing.

Cheers

Hi mate, make sure your Max Unit config is set to Meters and 1 unit=1cm.

Then make sure the scale for the Maxwell plug-in is set to the default value. (0.01 from memory.)

The two easiest ways to check if you have a scale problem, are either to create a box in max that is 1mx1mx1m. Add a maxwell camera and render. Don't render straight to MXCL, but open the created mxs file in Studio, and check that your box is 1mx1mx1m against the grid. (2D top view)

Or// open the scene in Studio and add a light from the File> Add object menu. These lamp models are to scale, so can give you an idea of whether your scale is correct or not.

Hope this helps,

Tim.

For 1 unit = 1cm I think you should set max unit to cm, or when you make a 1mx1mx1m box really you are making a 1cmx1cmx1cm

Correct me if I'm wrong
