1) Max
2) C4D
3) Maya

...but it is totally up to you. Maxwell is not yet fully developed and some software have a bit better link and fewer bugs with maxwell at the moment.

But at the end this will change, so just pic a software that you like.

good luck,

Currently, there are some limitations with Lightwave plugin (seems to be difficult to output alpha, for instance, but hopefully it should change), but some nice features too : diffuse material most of time can be used without any change from your LW model (you don't even need to apply Maxwell shader). And since Maxwell camera takes all its settings from the standard LW camera panel, you can easily switch from Maxwell to native render or Fprime with consistent results. So, I'll add this to Andronikos'list.
As you can see on this forum, people do produce good results from different packages, so, try different softwares and pick the one wich fit the best your working style/budget. As for ease of modelling, you might give a try to Modo, but you will need to import models in some other application for rendering. Unless we see a plugin for modo 201?

but what about rhino and maxwell ?
As you said... you will not have as much texture control with Rhino in the sort run. There is no UV mapping, tilling, or any type of projection other than planar. We may get some tiling soon, but that is it for now.

Also, there maybe a new plugin that could have more texture control but it is not a guarantee as it was announced a couple of months ago and nothing yet.

However, things may improve quite a bit when Rhino V4 comes is out.

cyberderf wrote:so.. do you think modelizing with rhino (easier than max) and texturing with max would be the best deal ?
Its quite possible. Many people have done it this way in the past, even before Maxwell... That is, modeling in Rhino and rendering somewhere else. (mostly rendering through Max, because of Vray and Brazil)

Agree 100%!

we do not need max just max plugins! :D

it all depends of what you want to model... rhino is only good for nurbs (might change in V4).. so things like character modeling are better off to do them in poligons. Or game developing when every poligon counts, rhino won't cut it.

I love rhino to death, it's so easy to model with. However, I export all my rhino models to maya to render them with Maxwell, just because I need more control on my textures.

I use Cinema4D with a mix of 3rd party plugins which suits the things I do.

If you have time why not give the demos' of various 3D software a try to see which one you get along with best.

hello cyberderf,

so you are fed up with formZ. why is that? when you do architectural stuff, (like i do myself) and especially simple geometry IMHO there is nothing better than formZ. you have great control over everything and are able to be very precise.
i also use c4d and i quite love it. but when it comes to built my architectural models i usualy do it in formZ.
there is also a pugin for formZ now. so you have a direct connection to maxwell. it is just released and still has some minor bugs of corse. but i think as andronikos said this will change in the future.

cheers
