Hi!

I just toght of a new challange for Maxwell Render. The dielectric mirror (http://www.dentonvacuum.com/coatings/di ... s.html#six)

I don't really know much about these. So I hope my setup makes sense:

I created a set of 8 thin slices and positioned them right behind one another with a very small gap.
alternating with high / low refracting dielectric material
Image
high: Flint Extra Dense EDF-3
low: Crown of Borosilicate BSC2

this is my result after 6h of rendering (level 15.23)

As you can see this ich not really what I would call a mirror.

So my question is:
is my setup wrong, or do a have to wait longer, do I have to change material settings?

Or is this physical detail not implemented in Maxwell because it would slow down the rendering process dramatically?

:?:

No it's not just a mirror that I need.

I wanted to challenge M~W :)

And I'd really love to know what it would look like in MW if it worked.

Hi Sam7,

Is very interesting what you are trying to get with Maxwell: multilayer film materials. But currently this is not possible to simulate accurately because when dealing with thin film coatings, effects like interference is very important, and maxwell does not compute this yet... but, take a look with the next material generation coming with the release, and maybe you'll get a surprise :D

Best regards,

Hi Oscar... this next generaton thing - only in october ???

Hi Bakbek,

Sorry, but i don't understand your question...

oscar... I think he is thinking... what I'm thinking.. this next generation you speak of, this promised land of expanded shaders... is it SOON? or do we wait until maxwellrender v1.

it seems to me quite easy to understand.. h'is asking if before october will be issued an intermediate version of maxwell with some of the final features  unless u was pretending not to understand

All these new materials will be avalaible for the relase, not before. Adam, there is no going to be more releases until october. Only patchs with bugs solved or minor features added.

Best regards.

Adehus,

You should not worry for this, we have our own beta testing team.

Hi!

To come back to the topic:
To be honest I did not expect Maxwell to be able to render such thing...
If this is really working in the final release that would definitely rock!!!! :D

To the rest of the discussion:
I can totally understand that NL will not bring out any more releases. Since there must be this enormous pressure for the Developing Team.
Please take your time for focused und intense hours and days of developing.

It's a pity that we don't have the chance to test anymore features, since it has been so much fun so far... :)
But that's just fine when thinking of the awesome featurepack waiting for us in october! :D

Keep your tail up! ;)

I understand Oscar perfectly. I think this is a good move on NL's part, look at the what the competition has done so far, the notion of a real physical sky environment (I am not talking about the kind of 'environment' in programs like Vue Infinite) in render engines did not exist until Maxwell. Now there are two other render engines with the notion of "physical sky".

NL needs to develop fully Maxwell Render and then put this out into the wild, so that any more imitation in the wild would be very small impact in relation to the original innovation.

It will be strange for us to wait, but I believe it is the best for the next release to the 1.0 version!

It will be fun. :D

Yes, so far Vray for example has swiftly moved to match Maxwell in every respect.
-From Progressive Path tracing
-to the upcoming Sky environment
-and the announced Physical camera model.

We can argue that none of these are MAxwell inventions, but then no-one else has previously put all these in one package simultaneously in this fashion before Maxwell... all of a sudden we see imitators. If they were so confident in their offering there would be no need for imitation.... so I understand the need to keep a low profile for a little while.

From what I've heard, reverse engeering code is pretty hard.

There is ONE VERY big difference...because of their pre-release scheme they first need to fulfill obligations to the PAYING users. Otherwise they ackknowledge that all current users have been TRICKED (by saying "YOU are the beta-testers", "You will have the material editor in June", "YOU will have the final release in July") into buying a cripled software  Why will there NOT be any updates to the software but on the other hand they CAN release plugins ? Is that for the current PAYING users or is it for TRICKING some others again ? If you have closed beta-teams then you surely want to keep all your secrets from competitors: but WHY should this be important if you evidently already have so many paying customers ?

Since the beginning I NEVER saw the need for large amounts of beta-testers, since Maxwell is just a VERY simple interface to a VERY complicated renderer. Do you really need 1000's of users to come up with scenes that make you develop a stable renderer ? In all these months it all came down on the same bugs and issues, which still have NOT been solved. So essentially it is big scale sponsoring, which from a business POV is not that bad at all.

I use Maxwell for estimating lighting in my scenes (and for that I REALLY love it) and use other renderers (which have been used and tested in way more production environments) to make my final renderings. Since the developers of these have a much longer history my trust HAS BEEN and always will be with them until PROVEN (and this is the keyword) otherwise.

What part of beta don't you guys understand? At no point were we beta-testers - and if you guys knew anything about a programming pipeline, you would know this. Maybe some of you guys need some education in computer science along with your great artistic ability.

We received a BETA pre-release at a SEVERE discount with the promise of a full release - all you guys out there whining about not implementing the renderer into a production pipeline need to chill out.

October is only 2 months away - I have to say I'm impressed with how quick things are improving - but that's because I'm a have a computer science background and realize how long it can take.

Good show to Victor and Oscar and the Next Limit team. Keep up the good work and ignore the bitching.
