But make no mistake about it, there will be others, just as there were raytracers after the first commercial one was marketed. (BTW, does anyone know who offered the first full raytracer for public sale?) and HDRI and etc, etc.
Lets just get this one up and running right...
This is very true, Maxwell Render is the first of the
elegant render engines. There will be more, but what will separate them apart from one another will be
platform integration,
inter-platform workflow, and
adaptability to platform-to-platform translation and workflow (hint...big studios).
But often it is most important to be the first on the cutting edge as it helps with branding recognition.
We have seen this with the modeling programs. First there was zbrush, then silo, then modo, and now a zillion others. What is starting to separate them is workflow and complete integration "out of" and "with in".
Does not matter now, who comes out with the next and best and latest macro-scripting, topography redefining, super-duper gui design because the three with the branding recognition have won this fight and that is the big ones (Zbrush, Silo, and Modo).
