Hi guys,

I was excitingly going to install the new Maxwell beta, but thought to check out the feedback about it here first. To my surprise I could almost not find any positive comments that made it clear that the beta is an improvement, only complaints about unwanted blur, less photorealism, UV problems, etcetera.

I would like to read a roundup of the pros and cons of the new beta before I install it. I don't want to regret an upgrade, with all due respect to Next Limit. In case the cons win from the pros I may wait for the next update, because I'm very happy with the last alpha.

Thanks and cheers,

Metin

I'd give you one suggestion then, as you been reading on the forum as well as we all have done then you got a pretty summed up picture of it now. My advice is if you haven't installed it yet then hold until they release the new patch to solve the major issues with the current beta.
If things go as planned as they say then in about a week should the new patch be out. It's not too long to wait :)

Dude install it now!!! it will only take a minute :P

it is much better, only downside for some people is images produced are slightly blurry which oscar says he will fix for next patch

So yes you could wait but are you not a little bit curious

EDIT! - Have just read other posts where people have a few other probs, have not encounterd any myself though with the few renderindgs i have done!

Thanks for the feedback guys. To be honest I guess I will wait for the patch to be released. I am definitely curious, but if an assignment arrives then I prefer to work with a version that I've already tried 'n' tested.

Wise words, Rayman. I'll take that into account, but I'm still a careful type o' guy. :)

@ MetinSeven_com

If you are not on PC-Max, don't install (yet), I believe there are too many problems.

@ Rayman
I feel a bit insulted by your post Rayman. You are probably a PC - 3DS Max user, so you don't have many problems.
I am a Mac OSX - Cinema user and I can't use maxwell AT ALL!

I only managed some good images 3 months ago when I was using a Max Trial and the alpha version of Maxwell (on my lame PC).

Please don't underestimate the problems of other professionals.
I (and many others) have payed my end of the bargain and just want what I was promised. Nothing more.

Maybe beeing on the favourite side (PC-Max) makes you praise more than you should.
Maxwell is a GREAT product, but it is as usefull to me now as it was 50 years ago.

NL, please give us Mac users something more stable and useable.
Thanks.

P.S. I don't want to be insulting myself, but it is a fact that most Max users don't want to understand our side of the problem.

Hi Noseman,

I'm on PC with Max, but I remain careful anyway. I'm using Maxwell for production and unpleasant render surprises are not appreciated by the dreaded deadline monster. :)

You're welcome Metin and we all know you're a very respectful guy in this scene.
The word "beta" means so much to me as "alpha" is.
We all know this ain't a software yet, this is a seed.
If we feed this seed well, it would definitely make flowers.
And it may also have thorns, this ain't surprising.
We should first give, then take...
If I give I can make one flower, if you too, we can make two flowers.
If everyone here do the same, we'll surely have a garden.
It's easy to harvest them rather than planting.
But we like hard ways, don't we? 8)

You're a true poet, Tom. :)

By all means I didn't start this thread to gossip about the progress of Maxwell in any way. Maxwell is amazing and I fully support it, no doubt about that. I've only become curious if it's the right moment to upgrade to the beta yet, because of the comments I read so far, that's all.

By the way, during my years as a tester for various 3D software the consistently applied rule is that an alpha version means that the software is still in full early development, including major feature additions and changes, and that the beta stage means that major feature additions have finished and only bug testing and minor adjustments remain, in order to approach the release stage. I assume Maxwell still has a number of major additions in the pipeline, so to already call this version a beta is a bit confusing to me.

Just my $0.02. :)

Cheers,

Metin

sorry andrewsweet, i missed the question, as you see hundreds of requests here...
well,
glossiness and specularity is ok but there's no percentage transparency yet.
glossiness and specularity mapping and their values both work pretty nice for max but
it's ok i can't confirm if they work the same way in LW, there are LW guys around
to answer this question well.
also you can check the latest manual we supply (originated around max) for their usage
because they don't differ so much ;)

if you have an exact problem post it specifically...
